Country: TRINIDAD+TOBAGO (TT) Date : 2004 0825
A high pressure gas line exploded offshore when a high pressure valve failed, leaving one man critical and four others injured. The explosion occurred shortly after 1430 hours. Up to late in the night, one of the employees, 55-years-old, remained in a critical condition at a medical clinic. Four others were also admitted to the health facility. One man suffered injuries to his spine, another broken ribs, while a third sustained a fractured ankle. The 55-year-old worker was airlifted from the base to another place, before an ambulance transported him to the medical clinic. Around 1600 hours, another ambulance pulled up with two other workers. One of the men appeared to be semi-conscious. He wore nothing except green shorts and was lying flat on his abdomen. The other worker was conscious and appeared to be in a lot of pain. The third worker came in a smaller ambulance. A pillow was strapped to his left side and he seemed to be drifting in and out of consciousness. The fourth worker was brought into the compound on a wheelchair. He had injuries to his foot. The four workers who were brought by ambulance were in a stable condition. They were stabilized at a hospital before being taken to the medical clinic. However, the 55-year-old worker suffered massive head injuries. He underwent a CT scan. He died 23/days later at the medical center. The injured men were contract employees. Three employees had been servicing valves on the off-shore platform when the high pressure line blew. Investigations were being conducted. Twelve people were on the platform at the time of the incident. A 51/mm valve located on a 17237/kpa gas line exploded. The other workers only suffered from gas inhalation and were treated and released. The platform had been evacuated and the valve had been locked off. The sister of the died worker attacked government, his employer and the poor healthcare system. He was neglected and left to die.
